We should protest against and the efforts should be in practical, not only in words. i will be happy if anyone have spine to come front and say instead of just giving wishes. With reference to the article titled, 'How an artist was shorn'by Salil Tripathi, in Livemint, dated 4th March 2010, please note that I am just a common man and have nothing to do with any political mileage. The article rightly points out how religion/ caste matters create trouble repeatedly. However, in my humble opinion, it wrongly points out only India as a country where these issues happen. While it has pointed out that Satanic Verses was banned in India, please note that in the Muslim community the novel caused great controversy for what many Muslims believed were blasphemous references. As the controversy spread, the book was banned not only in India but also saw burning demonstrations in the United Kingdom. In mid-February 1989, following a violent riot against the book in Pakistan, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, Supreme Leader of Iran and a Shi'a Muslim scholar, issued a fatwa calling on all good Muslims to kill Rushdie and his publishers, or to point him out to those who can kill him if they cannot themselves. Salman Rushdie had to go into hiding even in the U.K.
Even though the article projects MF Husain as a victim and India as a villain, I would say that he is still unscathed and remains celebrated only because he was in India and he played the mischief on a tolerant community. While we give freedom of expression, we do not give right to hurt some one’s sentiments. What explanation can MF Husain give for such paintings? The only explanations given were that nudity depicts purity and nudity is celebrated in India at Khajuraho. If nudity in any form only depicts purity, why doesn’t he try and bestow that purity on the prophet Muhammed. Wasn’t he in flesh and blood? Let him do that in Qatar and then we will see what happens to the citizenship. As far as Khajoraho is concerned, it is the birthplace of celebrated art of Kamasutra. An artist should understand how nudity could depict purity or, otherwise extreme insult.
As far the concern for the future of arts in India, India has a history of celebrating them be it F.N. Souza or S.H. Raza or Tyab Mehta. Indian arts would be an encyclopedia in itself….irrespective of religion of the artist. There has been a reason for which MF Husain has been an exception.

The picutures you shared of goddess is done by Ravi Varma. how one can believe that our goddess are such a beutiful? the style of dresses (sarees , kerala traditional sarees) etc came up very recently. simlarly, when we look the traditional depicts such as Ajanta, Ellora and Kharaho etc, we get the different images of 'religion'. how can we engage with these kind of images and linking to our tradition and culture? are we right to criticise some people only just because we personally hold different images of them?

You may be astonished to know that 'Bharat Mata' as a new deity of Hindu pantheon of God/ess emerged only in the 19th century Bengal during the colonial/nationalist time. One person significant in the creation of this Goddess was Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyaya. Read his 'Bande Matram', an unruly and communal depiction of the Sanyasi-Fakir rebellion of the 1770s in Bengal. The point is that the picture of a saree clad Bharat Mata is the product of 19th/20th century aesthetics and nothing more than that. Hope you will read more Benagal history/Bengal art history to learn more about it.

Its high time that we Indians come out of the fabric of "Politically Correctness" which the media galore. We need to call a spade a spade and we should have the guts for that. Indian tradition is not a stupid kids story to be messed with. What M F Hussain did was not artistic freedom at all. It was a deliberate act based on a sadistic and perverted eye.
Every nation has an identity and Indians (Hindus, Christians, Muslims and all) should strive to protect its identity. Isn't it a known fact that India is home to Hindus first and to all others next? I don't think Jesus or the Prophet was born in India. Is there something to be frowned upon at this? Is there a constructed need to be otherwise?
We all believe in communal harmony, but I don't think this act of him calls for that. Had he been a true soul searching for his so called artistic freedom, he would have wiggled his brush to create his own representations of icons of other faith in the same 'genre' if there is one he really intended.

I understand that you are offended by Hussain's paintings. I understand that is greatly offensive to your culture and religion. However I can happily answer a few of your questions. Hussain's paintings are symbolic. He does not paint rape on America or Pakistan because he is not American or Pakistani. Liberal mindedness is not a negative. Hussain is a great painter, he started by painting old Indian movie posters and know he is an internationally renowned artist. Just because his paintings offend you, because you are think they are wrong and insult to your culture does not mean that you get to say bad things about him. If you do agree with them SAY THAT. Everybody is entitled to their own views no matter how contreversial. They are everbody's religion this is how he interprets his religion. M. F Hussain did some wonderful painting in his life.
